When it appeared in hardcover, Lo s Diary was an instant literary sensation. An answer to Vladimir Nabokov s legendary Lolita, the novel is told not from the point of view of the seducer, Humbert Humbert, but of the young girl herself. Diario di Lo-- Lo's Diary, as it is now in English -- is the now notorious rewriting of Vladimir Nabokov's classic novel, www.doorway.ruv fils, Dmitri, managed to create a cause célèbre by claiming that Daddy's copyright was being infringed upon and threatening (and taking) legal action to prevent publication. Lo's Diary by Pia Pera is very much a love it or hate it kind of novel, but one that is definitely worth reading if you are a fan of Lolita. Although it wasn't written by Nabokov, Lo's Diary is a retelling of Lolita, but this time from the perspective of Lolita herself and not that of her seducer, Humbert.
The author, Pia Pera, astutely imbues the adolescent girl with just the right temperaments for all her encounters, wittily capturing the moods and thoughts of a sullen tweenager: the callous girl-child raising a pet hamster (and its ultimate demise); the tempestuous antagonism between mother and daughter; the awakening cravings that emerge towards the new lodger and future step-dad; and the naïve compliance to ingratiate her travelling companion as the only feasible option now that she has.
